The first day of the conference will consist of presentations by senior project members, members of the EESC and DG SANCO. The presentations will include; an overview of the Welfare Quality project (Dr. Harry Blokhuis); Animal Welfare in the EU - next steps (Ms. Jaana Husu-Kallio, Deputy Director General, Health and Consumer Protection - DG SANCO); the first year results from the consumer research (Unni Kjarnes and Dr. Mara Miele); the retailer and producer research (Dr. Emma Roe and Dr. Bettina Bock); progress made towards developing a new animal-based monitoring scheme (Dr. Linda Keeling and Dr. Isabelle Veissier); practical species-specific measures to improve farm animal welfare (Dr. Xavier Manteca); and a review of the tools that are developing to implement the results from the project (Dr. Andy Butterworth). There will be ample opportunity for attendees to ask questions and contribute to discussions around these topics.
