We have set up a 'Training and Mobility' scheme, which aims to increase European research expertise in animal welfare. The scheme, which is primarily web-based, is open to any individual researchers (pre- or post-doc) willing to carry out research on animal welfare and to host institutions of the Welfare Quality project or COST846. Other institutions (e.g. research or industrial groups) planning research on animal welfare can also use the 'Training and Mobility' support desk to help refine their job descriptions for research posts. The primary aims of 'Training and Mobility' are as follows: First, to provide information on research expertise on animal welfare in Europe (a database). Second, to assist applicants and host institutions in finding grants from European or national initiatives. (Welfare Quality does not provide grants itsself.) Third, to help young researchers assess their own requirements (through a self-evaluation questionnaire) and to help them build their professional plan. Fourth, to provide information on administrative constraints for working abroad. Finally, to help research groups express their needs and to help host institutions refine their job offers.
